Manipulation under anaesthetic (MUA) / Arthroscopic Capsular Release

Indications:

  • Primarily for a frozen shoulder

Procedure:

  • Performed under general anaesthetic
  • Local anaesthetic & steroid is injected into the joint
  • Full ROM is achieved operatively unless otherwise stated
  Post op
Day 1

Day Case

  • Passive & active ROM is begun
  • Ensure the joint is taken through all planes of movement
  • Ensure patient has an exercise & advice booklet
  • Book out patient physio appointment within 3 days
Out patient

Physio

Aims:
  • Reduce pain to enable ROM to be achieved
  • Restore full ROM as quickly as possible through passive & active assisted exercise, maintain & improve this range
  • Improve shoulder strength through a graduated strengthening programme
  • Continue physio until the patients' full potential has been reached
