Capsular Release
Arthroscopic Capsular Release
Description:
This procedure is performed for frozen shoulders, which have failed physiotherapy treatment. The tight capsule is released with a thermal probe via anterior and posterior portals. No sutures are used for closure and a sling is applied for comfort only. Movement commences immediately post-op on the ward.
Benefits:
- Restore movement
- Pain relief
Complications:
Complications are rare.
Must warn patients that full recovery can be slow and the rehabilitation is just as important as the surgery. They should expect 80% benefit at 3 months after surgery and full recovery after 9 months.
Complications <1%:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Recurrence
- Complications related to the Interscalene Block
Alternative Treatments:
Physiotherapy and injections – however most patients will have failed non-operative management before coming to surgery.
